MY UNIVERSITY STORY (PART 1) - I WAS ALMOST ASKED TO DROPOUT

My friend and I Molawa attended Uni together and to this day we will always chat about the difficult times we had at Uni I will briefly share one of such difficult times with you in this short article.

To start with, we attended one of the Ivy League private Unis in the country so there were a lot of demands; socially, academically, morally, spiritually, economically, and all other types of ‘allies’.

Despite all the pressures and distractions our major pain point like with any real university student was achieving good grades at the end of every semester, and this was a big struggle for us, not because our course of study was difficult like Physics or any type of engineering, neither is it in the same difficulty level as Economics or Accounting or Business Administration. It was a course that studies the human mind but unlike many of our colleagues our minds were absent from many of the classes hence very little was clear about the modules and no questions were asked.

A little back story (Grab a sit you will need it). In 2014, I got admitted into Uni to study Economics (following my father’s Idea that ‘Economic knowledge is the backbone of business leadership’) because I wanted to become a business leader in the future. Unfortunately for me, however, I failed Economics in my Uni entry exams. This was discovered during registration and the university presented me with two choices: to go back home and take my exams again or study a recommended course instead. This course was Psychology! Ah! Wait what’s that even about? (I had no idea people came to Uni to study such a course) The admission officer told me it was a good course and that I could become a counselor or a therapist… In my mind, I was like what? Why? Come on… there had to be an alternative and this man was bent on selling Psychology to me well he won. Going back to take an exam again wasn’t an option for me at all. Well moving forward, I met this guy in a similar situation to mine. In his case, however, he had applied to study Bus. Admin (Business Administration) but got admitted to study Psychology and his parent told him to go ahead with it, their logic was, ‘What you study at the University doesn’t really determine your career path, it’s more about your skills.’ So instead of staying back a year to reapply, my guy opted to forge ahead with the unknown course, hence the start of our friendship.

Back to the main gist. So, we have established that Molawa and I had no interest in minding the study of the mind, this means we were carefree towards the classes, tests, and exams. Well, our results were not shy to show themselves in the same form; 2 carry over each in the very first semester and 4 carry-overs for me and 3 for my friend in the second semester with a CGPA so low we were drowning almost to the bottom of the Atlantic.

When the new session arrived, we knew we had to brace up and sit forward to avoid more embracing results that could lead the University to ask us to leave as a result of poor performance.

We needed a strategy; the workload of this session would be too much for us to bear without help. Well got ourselves a strategy that bettered our performance that semester and the semester after. This strategy also moved from the bottom of the class to graduating top 10 without having to give up on any of our hobbies and hustles.

Would you like to learn about our strategy? Watch out for part 2.
